2017 – Titans u13 @ Parktown Rugby Festival

On Thursday, the 30th March 2017, Titans Rugby’s u13 team competed in the annual Parktown Rugby Festival, held at Parktown Boys High School. There were a number of phenomenal teams on display and the event was well supported. In what can only be described as a very hot day of both rugby and weather, the Titans Rugby u13 squad brought an exciting level of entertainment to the crowd and ensured a very successful day out.

Led by Captains Zack Van Niekerk and Ricky De Oliveira, this young Titans Rugby team would take three wins from three games averaging 46 points a game and amounting 21 tries in the process, only conceding one the entire day. As mentioned in a previous article, this was a young Titans team as a number of u12’s were included into the squad for experience, these younger boys did not let the team down and held their own against the bigger and older boys. The core of this Titans Rugby team proved once again too strong for opposition.

The team on the day was made up from 15 different representative schools, as mentioned in previous articles the team for the Parktown Rugby Festival was; Ricky De Oliveira (Brackehurst Primary), Jude vd Walt (LS Hannes Visagie), Lourens Kruger (LS Fairlands), Blake Neale (Kenton Primary), Daniel Stark (Dan Charter House), Latitha Hlongwane (St Peter’s College), Heinrich Horn (LS Fontainebleau), Joss Theophanous (Da Le Salle College), Ashton Coetzee (LS Fairlands), Zack Van Niekerk (LS Fairlands), Aiden Anhaeusser (Craighall Primary), Ethan Bester (LS Fairlands), Jean Adendorff (LS Randhardt), Nick Meintjies (LS Fairlands), Patrick De Villiers (Selcourt Primary), Connor Buck (Montrose Primary), Zander Du Toit (Orion LS), Joshua Boulle (St John’s College), James De Villiers (Selcourt Primary), Jack Bruwer (St Davids) and Rhys Thompson (LS Hannes Visagie).

One of the better drilled teams on the team

Playing some attractive and excellent rugby.

– Remo Murabito (Parktown Boys Sports Director)

In the first match, the team took on Laerskool Florida, always a tough team to play as LS Florida are a well drilled unit with lots of talent to select and exceptional depth coming from a region that is traditionally known for their tough rugby players. However, a pumped up Titans team would unfortunately provide too much of a challenge for them, and with some exceptional quick rugby, first through channel one play and then going wide and running the ball wide, would mean a big win in match one for the Titans team, overcoming their opposition 54-0.

v Laerskool Florida

Final Score Titans Rugby 54 (21) LS Florida 0 (0)

Tries – D.Stark, H.Horn, B.Neale, J.Adendorff (x2), A.Anhaeusser, C.Buck, Z.v Niekerk
Con – Z.v Niekerk (x7)

Man of the Match – Zack Van Niekerk

In the second match of the day, the Titans team would face a tough and bigger opposition from the south of Johannesburg, Dalmondeor. Dalmondeor provided a greater challenge physically and the score line was kept nil to nil for much of the first half, until the Titans 8th man opened the scoring and hence the flood gates. With the first points scored the Titans team settled into their rhythm and kept the points on the board ticking consistently. Keeping their defensive play structures strict, Titans ended out victors in a 38-0 win.

v Dalmondeor

Final Score Titans Rugby 14 (38) Dalmondeor 0 (0)

Tries – Z.v Niekerk, J.Adendorff (x2), P.De Villiers, H.Horn (x2)
Con – Z.v Niekerk (x4)

Man of the Match – Heinrich Horn

In the last game of the day, the Titans Rugby team would face a Lions Development team which had taken two victories from both their games during the day, resulting in the only two unbeaten teams of the day meeting each other in the ‘unofficial final’. The Lions team had pace all over the park and Titans Rugby team adopted a strategy to be the first to ball and play quicker than their opposition, a tactic that worked all too well. Besides from one defensive mix up, leading to a Lions try, the Titans team would finish the day three wins from three with a 47-5 win over the Lions Development team.

v Lions Development

Final Score Titans Rugby 26 (47) Lions Development 0 (5)

Tries – J.Boulle (x2), E.Bester, D.Stark, P.De Villiers, J.Adendorff (x2)
Con – Z.v Niekerk (x6)

Man of the Match – Joshua Boulle

Titans Rugby would like to thank all the parents for the tremendous support on the day, our core belief is our teams are successful because the parents back the program whole heartily and believe in the direction we are taking from a Titans Rugby point of view. Additionally, we would like to thank Mr Murabito and the organisers at Parktown Boys High School for providing us with training facilities in the build up to this festival and for the festival itself which was run professionally at all times.

A last note to quickly highlight our partner foundation the Smile Foundation, their logo looked fantastic on our kit and we hope it brings the needed exposure that the foundation deserves. Finally, to our sponsors Cell C and SL – always ensuring that the boys look like a million bucks and no one will doubt that on the day, the kit looked great and the boys enjoyed playing in it. Thank You.
